Klinsmann's thought on Johnson:

"Klinsmann: "Having Fabian at left back is outstanding because he plays a position where we were lacking in the past. He's one of the best left backs in Germany. Now people are noticing it because he's starting to score goals. [As for] playing him further up the field, we don't have another left back with the same quality for how we play, and again, we have so many midfielders that we'll keep him there for right now.""

I have not jumped on the push Johnson to LW bandwagon. I think he needs to saty at LB period.

The fact that Johnson creates goals in the midfield combined with the fact that the US team has scored multiple goals under Klinsmann just three times out of 18 (Slovenia, Scotland, Antigua) makes moving him to the midfield a no-brainer

Team needs offense

I was sort of against moving him up to LW, but after thinking about it I now want to see him up there. I guess it all depends on how Lichaj/Castillo/Chandler handle the LB situation though. Having a line up with Altidore, Dempsey, Landon, Bradley, Jones/Williams and Johnson would be pretty good.

Nope he needs to stay at LB. Where he has benefited greatly as a player. The USMNT has plenty of options for attacking midfielders. Klinsmann just needs to call them up.

When has he created goals from midfield? All of his goals (from this season at least) for Hoffenheim have been from LB.

His natural position is in the midfield.. Either right, left, or central. That's where he played for 1860 Munich and Germany's U21s

He started in the midfield last season for Hoffenheim. By the winter break he was second in the Bundesliga in assists. He moved to LB when there was a wave of injuries at the club

Look, he's a solid left back. No arguments. But he's an even better midfielder. He makes things happen. The only time he started in the midfield for the US was against Slovenia and he was the clear MOTM.

I just think that while the US isn't that deep at LB, the biggest problem is scoring goals and creating opportunities. That's a huge problem and the objective should be to get the best and most skilled players into offensive positions - especially when it's a natural position for them

Are Castillo and Lichaj as good as Johnson? No. But they can get the job done easily

Fabian Johnson, looks like he may be playing as a left mid/winger today.

Assisted on hoffenheims first goal so far, up 2-0

Johnson is doing very well

Chandler, on the other hand, is not

Chandler is the biggest DUAL NATIONAL letdown in a long time (perhaps ever) considering the buildup and hype. I don't know who I would trust with RB for Brazil. I am still sticking with Cherundelo and hope he ages like Beckham.

This is not to say Chandler is bad, this is to say that he is good, but the difference between what we were valuing him as during the cat and mouse games and how good he really is, is BIG.

No doubt Dolo is still the starter for this WC cycle. Chandler will have to duke it out with Yedlin in the 2018 WC cycle to be the starter IMHO.

Chandler has been Jekyll and Hyde this season.

We have to find a way to put Fabian Johnson in midfield. I know that Chandler is offensively ineffective at LB, but he was actually defensively good when he was LB for us. And let's face it, when the USMNT takes the field, the fullbacks are almost always offensively impotent. Therefore, does it really matter that Chandler is offensively impotent at LB?

I say go with Cherund at RB, Chandler at LB, and Fabian at LM, Donovan at RM. Now we have a team capable of scoring a goal.

It's more that I can't trust Castillo or Parkhurst DEFENSIVELY at the international level at LB. I can trust Chandler defensively at the international level at LB.

Possibly I could see Chandler moved to LB. I think it forces Chandler to be that much more tuned in defensivley when he is played at LB. He can still do the occasional overlap, and the understanding between Chandler and Fabian could prove to be a master stroke on the left side.

I wouldn't mind seeing this starting 11 at all.

----------Jozy-----------
Fabian-------Deuce-------Lando
-------Jones----Bradley--------
Chandler----Besler---Gonzo----Dolo
------------Howard---------

Dolo and Lando already have a great understanding on the right.

I think Klinsmann will have some player position options to think about going into the May/June camp.

Yes. Best lineup I have seen since Jurgen started the job. That is the lineup I want to see. That lineup will score goals. A+ (for our pool of players)
