Fab is the best winger we have whether at mid or at back.
He's the best player we have at dribbling at defenders from the wing and cutting inside and getting an accurate shot or cross off. At his best, he changes the complexion of a game against top competition.
We don't have anyone else with his quality at wing.

I disagree. Fabian Johnson is not a great dribbler. He is a movement guy who looks to pass and move.

I have always said games like cuba venezual etc we should always bring fringe players no need to bring starting 11 type players. I understand his point of long travel to play a crappy team and risk injury.

It would be interesting though to figure out if he is an issue in the locker room. I mean JK questioned his commitment-maybe bruce has done the same privately.

Besides that point, has anyone thought he looked good the last handful of games, to me it was really odd watching him. B.c he is a top level player, but with the Nat the last 5 games or so looks totally lost and not shown much quality. Almost like Chandler. So maybe there is something to him not bleeding red, white, blue.

Do you think Arena raised an "eyebrow" when Fabian went to the media, or the german media translates "important" from his text in german?

Like "it's cool to say this between you and me, but don't go around telling other people I said this", type thing?

Yes, this is part of why I'm ready to dismiss FJ as a fan. It turns out that his quote wasn't as bad as I thought, so I'm taking a chill pill, but I think there's a chance this is a breach of trust. OR it's just him re-stating the basic understanding that Europe-based players have with USNT, but since he already has a "special request" going, it makes him sound like a snotty little prince. Furthermore, he's backed out of more matches with a slight strain than just about anybody.
Add it all together.

Villafaña has sliced through defenses from outside to in, several times now. FJ is not untouchable.

I don't see this as guaranteeing FJ a spot for the qualifiers. By going public put his spot up for grabs...it is up to anyone else to seize the chance to take it. If they are playing at the same level as FJ he won't be selected. It actually puts more pressure on FJ to perform to get himself selected. All of this is actually a good thing.

I hope you're right, but I fear you may be wrong.

If Fab is better than Morris, Arriola, Acosta, Gooch, etc., I could give two shits if they get huffy that Fab plays over them in "important" games.

Does team morale matter? What if having some guy with special rules for only him pisses off the rest of the team? Do you think this sort of thing doesn't cause rifts in teams?

Also, what stoked3 said, one post above.

He is or was a decent player for us. He never looks all in and when he got his chance up the field, he was always a ghost . No hustle. His talent is there but i I saw more from Holden in his time than Fabjo. I'm ok if he is left off.

In no particular order, fab, jab, and JJ were clearly our best players in the last World Cup.
They were so good that had we had JK brought another striker near their level, we would've advanced past Belgium.

Can you imagine playing in Champs, Euro, Bundesliga league, then playing for a national team where you have to play with guys that couldn't make a Bundesliga reserve side?
Those guys have been carrying this program for nearly 2 cycles.

I'm sure Fab's candor raised more than an eyebrow for Arena. I'm sure he's ticked. Fab just created work for him. Now he has to address the issue with the media and in the locker room.

But that works two ways, Fab is now officially on the clock. If the perception is he's getting an easier ride, he has to be lights out when he's on the field...clear separation from the other options. Anything less and it won't be worth the potential trouble...and it still might not be worth the trouble if it blows up in the locker room. The best way to show it isn't an issue is to play his butt off.

Fabian is still an auto starter for me. I hope Arena convinces him to stay. I want him on the left wing like Arena wanted to do.

I totally agree with him about the useless friendlies.

We haven't lost a game since Arena took over and Fabian has played an important part.

With one caveat, FJ will still be playing in BULI, not in BULI3 and on top of his fitness.

He has? He played in a friendly and against T&T. Not exactly that important. He was left on the bench against Mexico.

Here we go...

JK's personal vendetta with LD coated every jackass decision he made. At the end of the WC prep camp LD was focused and ready to roll...it was a joke he didn't even get the opportunity to be a sub. Except for the handful of LD haters, it is universally understood that was a vindictive tragic blunder.

If Arena was the coach in 2014 he would have used LD in the same super sub role he's now using for Deuce.

I agree. But LD was not in good form going into camp, but I think JK bungled that up.

I'm a Donovan hater and agree with @chris. He was fat and I hate the guy but the fact is that an injured Aron Johansson was selected ahead of him. A fat has been is better than a one leg softy any day of the week.

But Johnson is not that. He is one of our best all around players who can pop up in plenty of positions on the field and is intelligent. He should of course start in the important games. Arena will be right there to tell him what to do and what not to do.

Retiring from international soccer after two world cups (hopefully) is not a shame or tragedy. I'm looking forward to seeing him in Russia- he hasn't ever let me down in a big game yet to be fair. He is a USA player let's get that straight.
