I should add that I don't think that the quote is damning evidence.

But my armies are on the border for that guy already, due to the reasons I listed above.

If Bobby Wood, Christian Pulisic, and other euro based players also travel to USA for friendlies, then I have every expectation that Fabian should as well. Fabian wanting an exception for him is little more than an expression of low interest in playing for the USMNT.

Except those guys don't get called in for non-warm up friendlies all that often. Pulisic, Wood, etc. aren't even here for the Gold Cup. Now, I don't think they have any special arrangement, but I'm pretty sure there's an understanding not to drag those guys over here for garbage games.

I'm not surprised at all.

He hasn't looked engaged when he's on the field...just going through the motions...something wasn't right. He had strange phantom injuries prior to most rounds of qualies...which now appear to be just cover. He was basically playing himself right off the plane to Russia.

I seriously doubt he will ever play again for the nats.

And I do think there was a lot more to the split locker room. If that is the case, JJ being minimized and phased out probably added to his potential reduced comfort level in the locker room.

If that is truly the case, keep a close eye on Brooks.

Arena won't take anybody who isn't 100% engaged in the effort, no matter where they play or how good they are...you're either all in or you are out.

I can't see Brooks making a short sighted decision not to be committed to the USMNT. He's got 2-3 more WC's in him, with 2 as a clear, in-his-prime starter. In 2022, he could be in line to make himself quite a bit of money with a good showing in Qatar.

I'm fine with this, we learned he's the type of player that needs other better players around him to excel... I don't even think I've ever heard him speak.

I hope he's all in.

I hope he doesn't have the same agreement that Fab had regarding "important" games. My gut feeling is he does.

Only reason I would want to see him in a friendly is to try the 3-5-2 formation. With our depth at CB I feel this is our best potiential formation. In fact the October qualifiers should be glorified friendlies if we 6 points in September. What I would like to see is

Howard
Cameron. Brooks. Cameron
Yedlin. Acosta Johnson
Pulisic. Nagbe
Morris. Wood

You don't have these quotes from other guys in the same boat. Nor do they talk about "I only wanna play one position"

Facts. I have said this many times. He plays with better players at Gladbach and in his best position. He is playing around players for club that create more chances for him than with the Nats. He is a pretty good player and I will miss him but if he does not have the talent around him, he is dispensable. I would love him with the national team as long as he wants but he is not a world class player that if he is not in the line-up then the dynamic of the team changes completely.

That said, we are better with him and he brings something to the table but he is not a player that makes us significantly that much better like Bale, Robben/Ribery, Cuadrado, etc...

I just think it has the potential to create a huge divide if Fab is brought in for "important games" and allowed to slide right in and play 90'. You would have guys like Morris, Arriola, Acosta, Gooch, busting their but to get a chance to step on the field, and be put on the field in friendlies and "non-important" games, and then Fab will walk in if its convenient to him and take their spot. No hard work. No gelling with teamates. Thats how mercenaries act. No need for that on the team. If he was still our best player like he was in Brazil then you maybe work around it. Now we have Pulisic, Brooks, Wood who are all more valuable, never mind guys like Yedlin, Bradley, Nagbe who can also hold their own.

Question for you guys

Do you think Arena raised an "eyebrow" when Fabian went to the media, or the german media translates "important" from his text in german?

Like "it's cool to say this between you and me, but don't go around telling other people I said this", type thing?

Fab is the best winger we have whether at mid or at back.
He's the best player we have at dribbling at defenders from the wing and cutting inside and getting an accurate shot or cross off. At his best, he changes the complexion of a game against top competition.
We don't have anyone else with his quality at wing.

I don't have a problem with this because quite frankly, I trust Arena to bring in the player who he feels fits best with what he wants to achieve.

I don't see this as guaranteeing FJ a spot for the qualifiers. By going public put his spot up for grabs...it is up to anyone else to seize the chance to take it. If they are playing at the same level as FJ he won't be selected. It actually puts more pressure on FJ to perform to get himself selected. All of this is actually a good thing.

I do not think we will see FJ play in any domestic friendlies...but I think he will play in European based friendlies.

If Fab is better than Morris, Arriola, Acosta, Gooch, etc., I could give two shits if they get huffy that Fab plays over them in "important" games. Maybe it's a little strange that he publicized these comments, but I don't think what he's saying-that a Euro based, veteran player should only be called selectively-is in any way controversial. It's not like he said "I'll only play in the World Cup".
