So Fab has discussed that he will likely retire from US Soccer after 2018 World Cup. No surprise there. What was surprising from his interview is that he came out and said that he and Arena have an agreement that he'll only be called in for "meaningful" games. I can't believe that A- This is ok with other US players, and B - He's dumb enough to say it to the press.

Talk about commitment issue. If thats how he feels then leave him home. I'd much rather a guy like Arriola or Acosta (pushing Pulisic/Nagbe to wings) who has skill, is getting better, and is hungry to prove he belongs, to a player who feels like he's doing US a favor by gracing US with his presence when he deems it convenient to him.

Was just about to post about this. I hope Fabian never plays for the USMNT ever again, immediately. It will hurt the USMNT, I accept that.

I wonder if this has to do with a move to left back

I may be wrong, but this is going to cause a tidal wave of anger from USMNT players, especially those who will be benched so Fabian can play. No?

If Arena is cool with only calling him for important games (which really isn't outside the norm of a European based player) and Fabian performs in training and, more importantly, in games, then why do we care?

@MSantoine, do you have a link, my man?

If this is true, I never want to see him in the jersey again, and furthermore, I will not support the team if he or Jermaine are on the roster, period.
(Jermaine for his adorable little "wear Mex jersey, post pic on social media" stunt)

This is a point of principle, I am not a "results are the only thing that matters" sports fan.

If Bobby Wood, Christian Pulisic, and other euro based players also travel to USA for friendlies, then I have every expectation that Fabian should as well. Fabian wanting an exception for him is little more than an expression of low interest in playing for the USMNT.

Wow.

Saddened by this. He has been one of our best field players over the past few years and he will be missed on the pitch.

I wonder why...is he unhappy? Was he less committed to begin with?

He was very disappointed when Klinsmann was fired and you wonder how much the locker room is divided between the dual-nationals and native born. Maybe the dual-nationals feel that the atmosphere is changing (I'm thinking about Tim Howard's comments).

Did you feel the same way when Landon quit?

I seem to remember Tim Ream saying something similar. He got called into camp which included 2 friendlies and played 6 min at the end of one game. He missed a lot of preseason in Europe and was like, please only call me if you need me. The USMNT is not Fabian's only obligation and travel across the pond can be very draining, does he really need to be called in for a friendly with Cuba etc. It doesn't mean he is uncommitted to the USMNT. There is such a thing as burnout, sometimes these guys just need time off to be able to maintain a high level of play. There is nothing wrong with being honest with your employer about your needs. I see nothing wrong with what Fabian said.

I appreciate the enthusiasm, but it would appear that this decision is based on family and the birth of his son this winter.

Merely expressing this sentiment once is unforgivable.
Goodbye, you piece of crap.

Also, for those of you who don't remember, there were rumors of "major foreign-born players" who were only playing for the US to further their careers, and openly barely cared.
Landon Donovan and everyone else who knew who it was should have named names a long time ago, rather than try to throw all of our foreign-born players under the bus.

As for Jones, he's more of a "huge personality", Jermaine-first type of guy. Like he's either going to use that huge personality to bring everyone up or pull everyone down. Fair enough. That part of it just comes down to "Is he still good enough at this age?" for me. If he's not, he's actually a drain on the team.
But the other part, taking a picture of himself in a Mexico jersey, is part of a patter of being more interested in being the center of attention than he is in following a code.

As for other dual-nationals, if their heart is in the right place, then hell yeah, welcome.

Thanks for that. Ok, that is different then. I am fine with it.

Seems to me he is prioritizing family time and being a father and I can't fault a guy for that.

By announcing it early, he not only given a reason/excuse for not being selected, he has also advertised his spot is up for grabs if anyone is good enough to take it and is giving players the chance to try. It means if he complains about not being selected it means Bruce has moved on from him.

I see us playing a lot more 3-4-3 in the future, so it is not a given he will be selected.

Dude, FJ has two special requests now, and he expressed at least one publicly, if not both. That's too much, and it shouldn't be public.
1) only one position, k?
2) only important games, k?

#1 is already a huge problem for me. Adding #2 to it gets a big F U from me.
Fabian has had several recent matches where he looks half-hearted, do you not remember?

If Ream says the same, he can walk, too. Bye Ream.

Why? Because:

1)There are already logical standards about when to call or not call Europe-based players, and Arena follows that. Lichaj and Miazga are clearly floating between 1st and 2nd string for this GC, which means between 1st and 3rd string overall. We need to see them. (90% of Y/A want Miazga to start over OG, and that's probably the most salient place where we disagree with Arena right now, but that's outside the call-ups question)

2) Turning down a call-up for important family reasons is a completely different matter from having a policy that Arena/US Soccer has to listen to. Do the players get to decide what's important, now? What if a friendly with a top 10 country is deemed important to Arena for determining our WC lineup, but not to FJ? I don't want to see more half-hearted FJ performances, 11 months to WC 2018.

3) You don't just get to play if you're called into camp. You have to show it in camp. If FJ or Ream comes into camp and doesn't show it, now what? They get to play anyway? Who's in charge, here?

If he wants to skip a match to be there for the birth, yes I get it.
If he wants to skip a match to just be around his family in general, he can take a hike.
