I disagree with this in the context of the national team. Donovan tormented Mexico. He scored huge goals in the WC. Demps scored more big goals for Fulham than with the Nats, but he came through internationally as well.

The idea that Landon played in a bunch of meaningless friendlies to pad stats doesn't track either. Donovan averaged 10.7 national team appearances per year. Dempsey was 10.1. You can't tell me that somehow there were more "meaningful" games for Dempsey, given how their national careers overlapped.

And I give full credit to Demps for going to Fulham and constantly having to prove himself over and over again with every new manager there. He scored huge goals for them. But we should also realize that the moment he took a step up in class to Tottenham, he struggled for PT, got loaned back to Fulham, then jumped back to the MLS for the money.

Demps vs. Donovan is at least close. O'Brien isn't in the conversation. He was a great prospect, and had he been injury free, and made 75+ appearances for the nats, maybe we could talk about him. But a guy, no matter how talented, that only had 32 caps doesn't
Dempsey spent one season at Tottenham where he made 43 appearances scoring 12 goals in all competitions. I don't think he struggled for playing time. He then signed with Seattle for the money and Seattle loaned him to Fulham for a couple months. He scored big goals everywhere he went.

I see 33 appearances, 26 starts (subbed off in 12). He wasn't getting the same amount of PT, and apparently got tired of having to fight for a spot all the time, so he went for the cash grab in the MLS.

His Wikipedia page shows 43 but maybe that's wrong. Did you count the 10 he had in Europe League? If 43 is the correct numbers that would be about the average number he got at Fulham. He was also the third leading scorer for Tottenham that year. He took the money because he knew his playing days were numbered and he needed to make as much as he could while he could. Some of these athletes will never be able to make anywhere near that kind of money after they retire. They may need to make what they have last for 50 years. Taking the money is about ensuring the future of their family and not about not wanting to fight for their spot.

I don't blame Dempsey at all, and he made MLS and Seattle better by making that move. He didn't need to fight for his spot anymore.

I have a feeling Leverkusen and Wolfsburg won't go quietly. But Swansea looks to be in the driver seat. Personally I think he would do better in the Bundesliga.

So I guess it depends on if there is an option to buy in the loan. If it is going to be a straight up 6 month loan with no option to buy then not having to learn German seems reasonable. Also being on a team fighting for promotion seems pretty attractive as well. He could feasibly go and end up on a premier league team if they get promoted.

I read the sad news that his dog passed away in May of 2020, so there really is nothing holding him back now from at least testing the waters and testing himself.

Morris is departing USMNT camp. Looks like his loan deal to Swansea is a done deal

Stretchered off looks like the other ACL. Lets hope I am wrong. Will know more when he sees a Dr. Probably the end of his loan.
