Some juicy stuff in Howard's new book. We'll see what else comes out, but Friedel's side of the story sounds more believable to me.

Seems like more of a misunderstanding. I think both sides believe they are telling the truth.

Now we know the real reason why Friedel left the USMNT at such a young age for a keeper. Looks like him and Timmy Howard weren't exactly buds.

I still give Friedel a slight edge over Timmy Howard as the USMNT's best GK.

This.

Friedel's version of the story is logical and understandable. Seems more likely that that's how it went down.

I'd rather have Timmy as my keeper though which is what I thought this thread was going to be about when I opened it.

One thing that makes it hard to chose one or the other is in Howard's best games us usually lost while in freidels best games us won.

Don't think for one minute this wasn't about self interest. Manchester United were pla ying around with the remains of Fabian Barthez. Friedel was most definitely in the running for a probable transfer to them. Howard was viewed as a better product, Friedel was trying to undercut him.

It's an endorsement letter, a piece of paper with subjective information, it probably detailed things like Howard will be the greatest US goalie in the future, he will earn 100 caps, Tim Howard is the best young goalie in the league, all subjective points that Friedel didn't want to sign off on, and in conjunction, Friedel went over his house to show him HIS failed paperwork, basically saying, listen if this didn't work, I'm not vouching for you.

After all this, I do agree Freidel was the better goalie, especially considering how long he lasted. He would have been serviceable to United for as long as Howard would, (by now, United would have traded him in for De Gea or the like).

I can't stand Howard consistently being beaten near post =(. Or caught out of position. As far as shot blocking, Friedel was just huge. He had clear advantages when having to make stops. The fact that Howard rivals or even at times surpasses him with highlights is a tremendous credit to Howard.

Friedel being a naughty boy? Who'd have expected? This does help clear up a lot of the confusion as to why Keller was promoted so soon, despite not being able to lace Friedel's boots. Obviously Brad was not a team player, could you imagine Howard doing this to a Hamid or Johnson or the kid from Maryland-- douche and turd sandwich. I have wondered forever why Friedel was dropped despite being an absolute beast, and now we know why.

Common, wouldn't you help a teammate out with paperwork if you could? Who cares if letter contained exaggerations. I would think all of you would have signed because surely no one gets in trouble with "well he wasn't really the #2 keeper for USA, he was #3, so we will penalize you Brad Friedel!!"

I would say Keller and Freidel were about equal...Keller was steady with good positioning and reading of the game while Freidel was more athletic and made the more difficult saves. I will say Keller was probably the better teammate and was probably #1 because of that.

I would take either over Howard. Howard is more athletic and makes more highlight reel saves than Freidel, but his positioning is crap and gets beat to the near post or over his head much too often.

So, this thing is probably just going on so Howard can get his book advertised in media. I would not be surprised if this issue is completley exaggerated in the book just so the media can overreact to it. Both these guys are probably really good friends after playing in england for all these years.

Don't know Friedel just demanded that Howard apologize to him for that excerpt. Doesn't seem like really good friends to me. People need to get over this notion that all American players are really good friends. Life isn't like that.

Things I believe in;

not because I think I'm important, but because I want to distinguish between what we all know as fact and my opinion on what happened

I think this is absolutely done for promotion

I think they might have been friends or at least working buddies; (even though it might be doubtful since Friedel has been out of the picture as the USMNT no. 1 for sometime now) but that is gone since this has probably blind sided Friedel.

I think howard's letter was total flowery put together by all interested parties in order to get him that gig at Man U. Since Ferguson was on that letter too, I think it was exaggerated but for the effect of getting the PFA to get him to sign off

I think Friedel doesn't sign it, yes because it wasn't the most earnest of descriptions of Howard's professional resume at the time, but mostly because he didn't want to go out of the way for a potential competitor. 2tone is right, athletes are competitors, and just because we go in the fox hole together against the world when we play in international competitions, there is def envy, jealousy etc ill will about each other's stature within the ranks. I honestly think this was the case with Dempsey and Donovan too. With no hard evidence to support this, I think Dempsey felt vindicated for the path he took, to be favored over Landon by an international coach. Especially after everything that transpired heading into the 2014 WC.

Sorry, not so much an international coach, he's our coach, but a luminary international figure. this is one of German's greatest footballing products ever. Regardless of his reputation as a head coach.

It's really hard to imagine in any professional sport that 2 people who are truly competing for the same position (ie, not a clear mentor/mentee situation) could be friends. Surely it's the exception rather than the rule.
