Now it's essentially a one-off in Montreal. Not a bad result by any stretch of the imagination but the smart money is still on America.

Ciman was the man of the match. He was clearing everything. He's got my vote for the best non-DP acquisition this offseason.

Three questions / comments.

1) Was America's goal in the first half which was called offside actually offside? They didn't show the replay in the stadium.

2) It looked like Soumare got away with a hand ball in the box in the first half. What did you guys think?

3) The non-red card was infuriating. The ref has two options in that scenario either determine that it's not a foul and play on or give a red card for a foul by the last man which prevented a goal scoring opportunity. A yellow card is not an option. It drives me nuts when refs create their own rules.

The disallowed goal looked like an English offside as I call it (by the narrowest of margins but the English would still argue it was clear as day). I'm not sure how Club America could complain about anything involving officiating. They could have easily had several players sent off (beyond the clear DOGSO, the kick out at a Montreal player on the endline in the first half, the studs up challenge on Piatti in the second, the shove to Bush's face after the goal (for context, Olivier Occean got a red and a multi-game suspension in Concacaf qualifying last time for a very similar incident), the player who shoved Duka in the back as he was walking off, etc.). It was farcical but unfortunately this is the Concacaf world we live in.

A CONCACAF Champions League win by an MLS team would absolutely historic and would qualify them for the Club World Cup. It'd win the league exposure and respect, but more importantly SILVERWARE in an international tournament, something an American soccer team at any level has never done (yeah, they play in Montreal, but how many Canadians are on the team?), finally getting rid of what the Mexicans always had on us (that their club teams dominate ours)...and you guys are rooting against this? Way to support the league and American soccer. Unbelievable.

It's fine if fans want to root for MLS period. I just don't feel the need to actively root for Montreal. I wasn't really actively rooting for America either. I was being facetious.

Longtime listener first time caller.

ahem... I'd call this an International Trophy

1998 InterAmerican Cup Champions
Interamerican Cup
D.C. United 0 - 1 CR Vasco de Gama, November 14, 1998
D.C. United 2 - 0 CR Vasco de Gama, December 5, 1998
D.C. United wins 2 - 1 on aggregate

In one of the greatest triumphs in the history of U.S. soccer, United posted a continental double and earned the right to the title of "Champions of the Americas" with a victory in the Interamerican Cup. Facing South American Champion CR Vasco de Gama of Brazil, United lost the home leg 1-0 on November 14 at RFK Stadium before 26,213 fans. In the away leg, United played at Lockhart Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Tony Sanneh's first-half goal drew the teams level on aggregate before Eddie Pope's goal in the 77th minute gave United the historic victory.

Wow terrible defending by America but a nice finish by Romero. Alvarado was the first of many America players to look foolish on that goal.
