I am working on figuring out which league has had the most international appearances.

Only appearances (being an unused sub does not count) in official Fifa matches count.

I am doing it using the last cycle (2011-2014 World Cup).

So tournaments that count are:
2014 World Cup
2014 World Cup Qualifying matches (only final stages for each confederation..IE the Hexagonal is all that counts for the CONCACAF).
2013 Confederations Cup
2011 & 2013 Gold Cup
2011 Copa America
2012 Euro
2013 AFrica Cup of Nations
2011 Asian Cup
2012 OFC Nations cup

So far I have finished with the UEFA and CONMEBOL. Here is the top 10.
English Premier League - 1,463 appearances
Italian Serie A - 1,288
German Bundesliga - 927
Spanish La Liga - 825
Russian Premier League - 772
Turkish Superliga - 428
English Championship - 387
Ukrainian Premier League - 361
French Ligue 1 - 344
Brazilian Serie A - 258

So Far Liga MX is 11th and MLS is 37 (however both are lower than they will end up as the Concacaf has not been finished). Also I suspect Ligue 1 will pick up when I do the CAF (lot of African's playing in Ligue 1).

I love the enthusiasm and the thought process but I think you've got to be careful interpreting the results. Certain countries pressure their players to stay in the domestic league (turkey and Russia especially) Also since there are more mid level teams then elite teams you'd think the mid tier leagues will all get a bump.

And you should work for them as a writer. Or editor.

Ps: Did you major in statatistics?

You want statistics ?? Are you satisfied dunlopp ???

How about give me all league appearances since 1930 when the WC started. I would love to see that!!!! That way we can know which is the best league ever.

Wow. Seriously. How can anyone give him crap for looking into this. No matter how or if you want to interpert the data it still will be neat to look at. People need to get off their high horses

I wasn't interpreting it in anyway. That's why I didn't say "best league" or anything like that. Just the league with the most international appearances.

I am employed, but during the summer I have little to do at my job. So I fill up the time, doing stuff like this, it also helps me LOOK busy...

People are different. That's what makes life so interesting. Not that I've been to a baseball game in 20 years, but when you go you'll always see people sitting there keeping the score. Not my cup of tea, but they ain't hurting anyone. The key point here is not to draw many (any?) conclusions from the exercise, which our protagonist (or antagonist for some of you) in this case is admittedly not doing.

Well stated. To each his own, I say; I try not to make broad generalizations and I don't see that as the objective of this exercise here either. USAGunner, if a guy is property of a club in one league, but playing on loan at another club in a different league, which are you counting him under, parent club or the club he is playing for?

Semi-related ESPN FC (which sucks but every now and then they release an interesting article) have an article about MLS due to the all star week. They polled several european soccer officials, announcers, club spokesman, etc to gauge how MLS is perceived worldwide. Every single person polled (except Lalas) said MLS was in the 12-15 range for league ranking. Lalas had them in the top 10 and the author of the article thought they were right at 10th.

No statistical data, just how MLS is still perceived by industry experts.
