I think he'll be a major part of the Copa America roster and may help us in the early rounds of WCQ before being phased out before the World Cup a la Bocanegra or Herculez Gomez this cycle.

I'm not so sure. The few games I've seen of him against the Sounders he stands out as one of the best, if not the best, on the field. It'll be interesting how his game continues to evolve, or devolve, as he gets older but only time will tell. He'll definitely be a lock for Copa America. After that it just depends who steps up.

He'll last as long as JJ is still in the mix, because once JJ is out of the picture the captaincy will go to MB and Deuce will be phased out.

I think JK will be very aggressive with the transition to youth, I'm all for it. With LD already gone, I'm ready to move on from Deuce and JJ. I'd be very disappointed if they were both in the mix for the Copa in 2016...The faster we turn the team over to MB the better off we'll be...

You guys are just assuming we will have better options than Dempsey and Jones by 2018 and 2016. No prospect is a guarentee. Even 15 solid prospect is no guarentee that even ONE of them will be better than a mid-30's Dempsey.

I put this question to you all.

How much longer will the USMNT need Dempsey? I say he starts to get fazed out after the Gold Cup next summer. What say you all?

It all depends on Green/Gyau in my opinion, if we can get our creativity from the wings, then we can load up on Jones Cameron Beckerman Bradley in the midfield, completing our front 6.

etc... since all of those are at least younger than dempsey (with the exception of Jones, but dammit, Jones was very close to world class for us, and clearly our best outfield player)

If Pulisic, Flores, Hyndman even Diskerud amount to anything then Dempsey becomes expendable. In my opinion readily so, because Klinsmann will value European players over MLS players. A great built in excuse to leave dempsey behind. Why would he look for an excuse? Because he's already said he wants our players in Europe. And Dempsey is on the wrong side of 30, in our domestic league.

Hell if Hyndman Canouse Trapp etc start to perform in Europe, and Trapp or any upstart in the MLS starts to outperform Bradley in his own league, we might have the same post about Bradley. And by extension Jones if he eventually settles down here, providing he doesn't just call it quits. But that's a much bigger if.

I see JK moving to more of a 4-4-2 once Deuce is starting to phase out...probably starting after the 2015 Gold Cup. We'll probably see him coming off the bench in the Copa and I'm guessing he's going to retire internationally after that tourney.

Do you think he keeps beckerman, if we go 4 4 2 what's that setup look like for you?

Is not about having 1 or 2 really good players. If you have a good collective team that's all you need. For example Germany has no star that really pops out, maybe muller but that's it, compare to Argentina they have some big star name players, they had a poll on ESPN how many people knew goetze before he scored and like 75% said they did not know him. I was a bit surprised because I knew he was arguably a top 5 player for Germany. All usa has to do is find the right players whether is from mls or Europe, or even in Mexico.

I don't understand that narrative from Germany. They had 10 players who are top 100 in world, making them each a superstar. I guess "mega superstar" = Top 10, "superstar" = Top 100.

I agree. But with regards to Dempsey's functionality, if we get two wingers who have pace and creativity and can attack, do you take Dempsey and place him above Altidore? I think functionality comes into play. Green and Gyau while they may seem like longshots (maybe a more conservative reach would be shea or the parker brothers), if they get time in their respective club teams, they immediately go to the front. Do they not?

I think formations are being phased out. Really everything is fluid now. you can start in a 4-4-2 transition to a 4-3-3 and then transition into a 4-5-1. It's about the players abilities to play multiple positions now not a rigid set formation and plugging players into that formation.

That was one of our biggest problems at the WC. We had no wing play, sorry but zusi and bedoya will not be the answer. I been looking at the young players and there isn't a guy or 2 that pop out and tell you they are the future wingers. I see a lot of potential players that could blossom at the wing positions, some that come in mind are parker brothers, Nagbe, gyau, green depending what position he plays, Akale, pulisic, gatt when recovers. Don't think Fabian will be at wing for the future I see him as a LB and Yedlin at RB.

If there are two players who will be phased out: it's Bedoya and Zusi. Hands down.

Dempsey was a late bloomer so his legs are probably on the young side. Dumb question - does Seattle play on turf?

Knowing Dempsey, he wants to play in 2018 so that helps.
