I put this question to you all.

How much longer will the USMNT need Dempsey? I say he starts to get fazed out after the Gold Cup next summer. What say you all?

Not until his form dramatically dips. Slight dip and Jurgen will still keep him. Dempsey doesn't rely on speed, so he can last possibly until even 2018 WC (as a sub).

Unless he pulls a Lando and shoots himself in the foot, I think he'll be in Russia in 4 years. Definitely not starting, but as a spark off the bench and for his leadership. Watching him play last night against LA, the guy has so much passion for the game. I think we'll need that type of personality in 2018.

Russia in 4 years at 35? Maybe. But I have a feeling younger players will step up, and force Klinsmann to make the change a lot sooner than what people think.

I would love that, to see the younger, talented guys step up. However, if Clint were to go, he would likely be the only one there with 3 previous trips to the WC. Doubt Howard will be there, or EJ. I think that type of leadership and experience, even off the bench, is important. And I think Jurgen recognizes that.

Which young players? It's a tall billing to be better than even a lagging Dempsey (in the withdrawn forward sort of position).

I expect him to be starting for the Copa in 2016. I don't expect to see him starting for the WC in 2018.

I think it depends on how JK views him. If he's viewed as a forward only its hard to see if staying above Aron and Agudelo on the depth chart (assuming those guys find/stay healthy).

Its actually a good thing for USNT if he's not around after the gold cup.

Neither Aron nor Agudelo really play Dempsey's role. I think there is a strong possibility Dempsey gets 60 min+ each game in WC 2018.

He looked afraid and worried. Maybe was more worried about Donovan outperforming him.. oh wait he did. Just like in that clash Fulham vs Everton. Donovan took the show. Maybe that's why he didn't say shit to jk after the cut cause he wanted to run the show. I like him and he is my top 3 players but his attitude sucks and he shouldn't br captain. He should be kept as a sub and let the up and coming players have a go.

So he looked afraid and worried when he slalomed past John Boye in the penalty area within 30 seconds and scored a beautiful goal?

I think he'll get less games after the Gold Cup but the Copa Centenario is something I could see him as a super sub.

Dempsey is never "afraid and worried". He scored three world cups in a row v Ghana.

Need is a relative term 2Tone, in the same way we dont need Landon anymore, neither do we need Dempsey. He will be lucky to play in the Gold Cup if you ask me.

I would expect Dempsey to continue to play a pivotal starting role with the USMNT in competitive matches/tournaments through the 2015 Gold Cup. By the 2016 Copa he'll likely be a starter, but subbed out in many of the matches. Beyond 2016 he'll be a bench contributor so long as he can keep fit and isn't overtaken by younger players.

Green, Gyau, Zel, Aron, Wood, Parker, Boyd, Agudelo, etc....

A contributing factor will be what formation JK uses in the future. Dempsey does well in a 4-2-3-1 or 4-4-1-1, but in a 4-3-2-1 or 4-3-3 he'll be more replaceable (IMO).
Have always been a fan of Dempsey but at some point he'll lose a step. We have to be prepared to move beyond the stars of the past and embrace those of the future.
