How far does the US have to make it for Jones to make the Tournament best 11? I suspect they'd need to make the semi finals because he's American.

I think this time around its different with a different mentality and jurgen. I was all about how clark was terrible in that goal give away but seeing how ghana made the Germans give up possession and punish them R. Clark style then you have to give more credit to ghana then what not. Ghana just good at that pressure in midfield.

In 2010 Ghana looked bad. Go back and look. They had zero goals from the run of play in group stage. They only scored 2 goals in 3 games, both from PKs. We came off winning our first group in history, and if not for horrendous refereeing would have had 7 points and a massive goal differential. Past them we saw a weak Uruguay team (Suarez wasnt yet Suarez) or an even weaker South Korea. We had a path to the semis without playing Spain, Germany, Brazil, Argentina, England, Portugal, Netherlands, Mexico, France or Italy (didnt make it). Arguably the top 10 teams in the world cup weren't in our quarter. People started realistically talking about a trop to the semis.

Now Belgium and a wounded Argentina is much tougher than Ghana and Uruguay in 2010 but we again avoid the top dogs and have easily the most open quarterfinal of the CONCACAF and CAF teams. Mexico/CR have to beat Netherlands (best looking team right now). Nigeria and Algeria have to beat Germany AND France (2 of the top 4 looking teams right now). Sure Costa Rica has the best chance to make the quarters out of the 5 of us. But I think we have the best chance to make the semis

Last year Maicon was the only player in the Best 11 not to play in the semis. And Brazil dominated until they lost to Netherlands. We havent dominated so Id say semis at a minimum.

Even if he doesnt make it Im sure some UCL teams have taken notice that he still has it

Jozy has been running/jogging for the past few days, and it looks like he may be training tomorrow with the team. Jurgen has stated that they are very optimistic Jozy will be available against Belgium. Probably not as a starter though.

You people are nuts with these lineup changes. We just made it through the group of death. 30 seconds away from a win vs Portugal and inches away from a draw with Germany. Chandler isn't all of a sudden going to start. Yedlin isn't all of a sudden going to start. Look for Bedoya to go back in the 11 instead of Davis and maybe Cam or Gonzo. And if Jozy is back then look at the Ghana game starting 11.

yedlin is not a starter. he is our most impactful player off the bench, so klinsy wont play with that. I don't think we will see the starting lineup exactly what we had vs ghana, because Jones is beasting in the middle, we dont want to push him out wide. Also, i doubt altidore starts so thats irrelevant. He will come in if we are done a goal, and i expect it will be for beckerman and then go to a 4-4-2 with another sub of yedlin in for bedoya. But i see the lineup being the same one we used against portugal. I think we will hop on belgium early and the only way we beat them is to score in the first half...

Nuts? I wouldnt say that. This is a tournament and you have to count on your entire roster to contribute. I dont think Yedlin will start but I would be ok with it. He's got his toes wet, I think he's ready to dive in.

I wouldn't mint seeing Johnson moved up for Zusi and having Chandler start at RB. I really think we need to sit one of Jones, Bradley and Beckerman, just so we have a like for like sub on the bench. Our boys are getting winded. It was obvious against Germany.

I agree but we were so bad at defense in 2010. We were so gassed from chasing 3 games in a row. When it came to Ghana we pushed ourselves too hard by falling early twice in first minute and extra time. We were the better team because we dominated the attack. I dont know if Uruguay would have been that beatable. They didnt have Suarez but they did have Forlan when he was scoring goals for fun

I would agree with giving Bradley or Beckerman a break. Go back to the 4-2-3-1 with Bradley or Beckerman and Jones as the 2 and either play Mix in the middle of the 3 with Deuce up front as the lone striker or play Deuce in the middle of the three with Wondo or AJ as the lone striker. My preference would be

Howard
FJ, Cam, Besler, Beasley
Bradley, Jones
Zusi, Mix, Bedoya
Deuce

If we have a lead we can sub Beckerman in for Mix and Yedlin for Bedoya. If we are chasing the game we can sub AJ or Wondo for Mix or Bedoya and drop Deuce deeper.

Teams change their lineup all the times. You go with your best guys at the beginning and see who is out of form, or what subs are in the zone right now. If a player is struggling (see Cameron and Bedoya) you replace him if you think the backup can do better. Davis looked worse than Bedoya. bedoya looked bad against Germany save for his almost goal at the end. Yedlin has looked great in his 50-60 minutes. I'd also be ok if someone wanted to give Mixx over Zusi, Davis, Bedoya. Or Chandler for that matter. If someone is struggling you dont keep putting them out there because others over compensated and you got a result.

My USMNT line-up vs. Belgium: First without Jozy, and Second with him starting.

---------Duece--------
-Bedoya--Bradley--F. Johnson-
---Beckerman--Jones-------
-Beasley-Besler-Gonzo-Cameron-
--------Howard---------

If Jozy can play but doesn't start, here are the subs:
Holding the Lead: Jozy for Bedoya (Duece goes wide), Chandler for Beckerman (Cam to DCM, Chandler to RB), Mix for Bradley
Searching for a goal: Jozy for Beckerman, Yedlin for Bedoya, Mix for Bradley

-------Jozy--------
-Bedoya--Duece--Jones-
--------Bradley-----
-----Beckerman------
-Beasley-Besler-Cameron-FJ-
-------Howard-------

If Jozy starts here are the subs:
Holding the Lead: Zusi for Bedoya, Yedlin for Jozy (Duece goes up, Jones goes central), Mix for Bradley
Searching for a goal: Zusi for Beckerman, Yedlin for Bedoya, Wondo for Cameron

maybe switch up everything and go with

Dempsey
Fabian Yedlin
JJ MB
Beckerman
Beas - Bessler - Cam - Chandler
Howard....

I would love to see this exact line up in a 433 false 9, maybe Zusi for Yedlin.

Agreed, this is a tournament and you have to use fresh legs and people who are making an impact. There has been 1 - 2 lineup changes every game due to injuries/fatigue/players not playing top notch. Klinsmann is not going to stop now, expect 1 - 2 changes from the Germany lineup. Which is what I suggested.

Second, you don't push Fabian into the midfield to bring in an unknown in Chandler. When Fabian has been holding his own. Chemistry on the back line is important, keep what you have there. I still believe you bring in Yedlin as a RM, he has gotten his feet wet and he's been performing great. He gives you a player who can attack and defend.

Third, Klinsmann doesn't believe Cameron's place is a RB and he's not going to play him there now. HOWEVER, look at our bench, Cameron IS the sub for Beckerman or Jones. Am I the only one who was ready for Cameron to come in for Beckerman in the 70th minute vs Germany? Mix is the sub you make for Bradley, but he definitely doesn't start in his place.

So kompany is uncertain for the game with his groin problems. Not a shock that groin has been giving him problems for the whole season.

Players get tired. Plus Belgium benched some of their starters in the South Korea game.

I'm all for more of an offensive line up. The US XI wasn't that good vs Ghana and was lackluster against Germany.
