I think the most over played storyline is that because it's in brazil the South American teams will all do better than normal. This isn't the 1980s or 90s. It's just as easy for England fans to get to brazil as it would be Italy. With modern travel and economies when Uruguay plays Italy the crowd will be 50/50 or favor Italy. I think Ecuador Colombia and Uruguay could be in for a rude awakening. I also think Argentina is getting way to much love just because it's in brazil. They are probably only the 6th or so best team yet have the third best betting odds to win.

Looks like the south american advantage was/is pretty real.

It's not just South. The Americas wrapped up a combined half of the knockout spots and were 8 out of 10 in getting out of the group.

Yeah but Costa Rica earned it, I hope they don't get tripped up under the pressure. Greece is the only team I really don't think deserves to be in the knockout round based on how they played at the group stage. I am happy for Algeria, their game against South Korea was fun to watch.

Rain - I need a math check on my group picks. I'm coming up with 22 points on the team picks plus 3 bonus points for picking the top 2 for three groups for a total of 25. what I'm I missing?

I need all the help I can get, I had Italy going to the semis...ouch! I was banking on Balo going off for at least three goals.

I'm not ready to admit anything yet. The best looking teams have all been from Europe. Netherlands Germany and France. Some euro teams disappointed but I don't think the South American teams have looked great.

Uruguay-last second win over England. Questionable red card then no call for them to beat Italy. Soundly beaten by Colombia.

Chile-lost 2-0 to Netherlands reserves. Lost to brazil in pks.

Brazil- needed highly questionable pk call to beat Croatia. Needed pks to beat chile (only because chile hit the post in waning seconds). Same chile that lost to Netherlands.

Ecuador-couldn't beat Switzerland.

Argentina-last second win vs Iran. Let's see how they look vs Switzerland.

Colombia-look real good.

Netherlands will be favored to make semis. France or Germany will likely make semis(holy epic potential quarterfinals matchup). One South American team is guaranteed semis. It may come down to Belgium, Argentina, USA for me. Who ever comes from that quarter will speak volumes about the regions.

Round 1
- 2 pts for picking teams that advance
- extra point for each group winner and runner-up correctly predicted

* 2 bonus points each round for any non-seeded team correctly identified

just make your picks - ill do the math

Well I have either 20 or 28 points depending on the interpretation of "extra point for each group winner and runner-up correctly predicted". Does this mean one point for each slot correctly guessed or one point for getting both the winner and runner-up correct?

I think Germany is proving my point.
