Know Nothing, you're the first person I've seen anywhere who has Ghana second in our Group. I keep trying to squash that thought but it terrifies me that you might be right. It reeks of 2006 when Italy, Czech Republic and the US were supposed to be battling for two spots.

Well I believe Ghana will be a stronger opponent than Portugal. Also, Snipes87 in the post above me also picks Ghana.

Also, while our team 1-23 is significantly better than the '98 cup team, there are many similar types of distractions:

Hakes exclusion a big surprise - Donovan exclusion a huge surprise

David Regis added to the squad late in the cycle - Julian Greene added to the squad late in the cycle

SS went off the reservation with a new formation right before the WC - JK has been tinkering with new formations leading up to the WC (I will say that while this is a similarity, JK isn't being anywhere near as radical as SS)

The one big difference between these squads, though, is that SS lost the players in the lead up to the WC while JK has not lost his core group.

I think the most over played storyline is that because it's in brazil the South American teams will all do better than normal. This isn't the 1980s or 90s. It's just as easy for England fans to get to brazil as it would be Italy. With modern travel and economies when Uruguay plays Italy the crowd will be 50/50 or favor Italy. I think Ecuador Colombia and Uruguay could be in for a rude awakening. I also think Argentina is getting way to much love just because it's in brazil. They are probably only the 6th or so best team yet have the third best betting odds to win.

Did anyone do the ESPN World Cup Pick'em? This one you had to choose who wins/draws or loses every single match.

part of it is that have this kid named messi who everyone seems to be pretty high on... 2-0 argentina

i do wonder if he has the support needed for a deep run, but he makes up for a a lot of deficiencies
