On what basis could England's current national team easily beat the USMNT? I mean that is just a ridiculous statement. Did England easily beat Costa Rica? No, England were lucky to tie Costa Rica. And the USMNT is better than Costa Rica.

For me there is no such thing as the best league. The European leagues are extremely top heavy with a few elite clubs.

Does the best league mean having a few elite teams always winning?

Does the best league mean having some of the best players in the world playing in that specific league?

Does the best league mean having competitive parity?

I enjoy watching MLS, and I enjoy watching Bundesliga, EPL, the Eredivisie, the Argentine league, Serie A and Liga MX due to American players playing in those leagues. I would probably enjoy watching La Liga if there were some Americans playing in that league.

For me I watch mostly MLS. I will always support MLS over any other league.

I retract saying easily.. But they still could, with players like Sterling and Barkley. Yeah they could.. It would be a close win, that's ok tho bc we will win a world cup before England will..

Gibraltar will win a World Cup before England. England has a good domestic league, underwhelming national team. They're the mirror image of the US. Good national team, underwhelming domestic league.

Hmmm. Costa Rica finished in the top 8 of the World Cup and the USMNT finished in the top 16...in what way does that make the USMNT better than Costa Rica? Yes, we finished ahead of them in qualifying, but we split head to head and had to use the snow of Colorado to our advantage to beat them. Add to that Costa Rica won a group that top to bottom was the third toughest in the WC.

The US had the hardest group, the longest travel schedule, a debilitating hit to the team when Altidore went out injured, and the hardest round of 16 match.

Costa Rica beat the USMNT in their house in extreme heat, humidity, a rain soaked field, and with MB90 injured just moments before kickoff.

Costa Rica had a good run in the WC but lets look at the facts about that run:

Clearly Uruguay were an old team, and not having Luis Suarez was a massive hit for that team.

Costa Rica played Italy after Italy had just played in Manuas. Teams that played in Manus were 1-6 with one team winning after playing in Manaus.

Costa Rica played an already morale depressed England in the final game.

Then Costa Rica played arguably the weakest team at the WC, Greece, in the round of 16.

They were largely outplayed by a superior Holland team in the Qf's. they were lucky not to lose that game in regulation by 3 or 4 goals.

I am not taking anything away from Costa Rica's run at the WC, but a lot of things fell nicely for them to make a good run.

They are a good team, but I would take the USMNT in a neutral venue every time over Costa Rica.

Wrong Currently Costa Rica is over usa. It doesn't matter what you do in qualifying is what you do in the WC. Heck would not be surprised if Mexico jumps usa in the next rankings because they had 2 wins. Portugal was bad Uruguay would of beaten them. Costa Rica did much better than usa in the wc specially performance wise.

Until Costa Rica tops us in either the World Cup Qualifying hex or a Gold Cup there's no debate. You cant use World Cup performace as its not even. If US and Costa Rica flopped positions would US have made the quarters? Maybe, maybe not. Would Costa Rica have gotten out of our group? Maybe, maybe not. Its ridiculous to use that as a comparison over tournements with equal competiton (ie WCQ and Gold Cup).

I believe using World Cup representation as a means to determine which league is best is a bit of a stretch. The best players usually play on the best teams that also happen to have the most money. So in essence you are measuring financial clout rather than league ability.

Its not a perfect way. It was more of a follow up. After coming up with the initial numbers, EPL was way ahead and someone said we'll see how they look come the knockout rounds. So there they are. Bundesliga and EPL neck and neck.

Also I think its a better means then most since all other methods (as mentioned by 2tone) are more subjective and can be weighed differently by different people.

The world cup has the best teams and therefore the best players in the world. The EPL sent the most players to the world cup, and for the most part they performed the best (again subtract bayern munich and EPL is the clear top dog standing). Would Real Madrid, or Barcelona, or Bayern be favored to win the EPL? Maybe. But the EPL is clearly the top league based off players performance almost every world cup (2010 skewed towards la liga due to Spain's golden generation).

In fact if you look at the top teams to miss the world cup, they are also represented more EPL than La Liga or Bundesliga. If most countries look to the EPL to get their best 23 guys than the EPL would therefore be the best league.

Saying Costa Rica is better than the US is about as sensible as saying the US was better than Mexico after the 2002 WC.

I only started thinking that US & Mexico are basically equal after the 2010 WC. And, no I didn't let Mexico's qualifying circus change my opinion. Now, if they would've shit the bed in this WC I might start to think differently, but they we're pretty good.

Some of you guys are really jumpy. I get the sense that a lot of you are kids. Development in soccer is often measured in decades. Don't be so quick to make conclusions based on 1 or 2 data points or short time intervals. And stay off my goddamn lawn.

Who are you calling jumpy?

In all seriousness I was just taking the piss and winding 2Tone up. I do believe the USMNT is better than Costa Rica but there are too many variables for me to agree that the US would beat Costa Rica at a neutral venue every time. Costa Rica is close enough in talent where a rich vein of form from a few of their players and a drop in form of a few of ours would allow them to win. Another variable would be the quality of the referee.

I guess this question is a little off topic but doesn't the next FIFA rankings (post World Cup) place every team in the position they finished at the WC?

So that means Costa Rica will be #8 and we will probably remain at our same rank at #13

Costa Rica is not better than the US! Especially with some of these younger US attacking players about to enter the fold.

Guarantee you, if the tables were turned and Spain won the WC but Bayern had dominated and won the CL, you would be saying the WC doesn't mean anything for determine the best league.
