I was gung ho about Landon being a better option in the center of the pitch than Dempsey and while I still think this is true, the fact that Landon is now a LW for the Galaxy makes this easy.

Here's a better question Landon or Fabian at LW? For me its still clearly Donovan as he's our most dangerous offensive weapon.

I like Fabian but he hasn't shown enough as an attacking option to warrant benching Donovan. Lalas and Twellman having both been on a rant that its likely either Landon or Dempsey in the starting lineup come Brazil but not both and that's a possibility but I think its most likely that they'll both be there with Fabian taking an outside back spot or coming off the bench.

No way Fabian doesn't start. Hopefully it will be at LB and not LW.

So lets take this further and for kicks assume that Fabian doesn't start at either outside back position. If he's your LW who sits? Donovan? Dempsey? Or Bedoya/Zusi?

dempsey unless he picks up his form. bedoya might be playing the best out of all 3 but donovan still is number 1 cuz he is just a legend.

Bedoya.

I could live with that, although I may be tempted to play Fabian as the RW and keep Donovan as the LW. I really like Donovan's ability to use his right foot when he cuts inside from the left.

Depends on who the starting CF is. If it's Altidore, then Dempsey sits. If it's AJ then Bedoya/Zusi sit.

I still think we are going to be in for a shock vs Ghana and see no Landon Donovan in the starting 11. I don't want that to happen. I'm just saying.

Along with the CB's, the attacking midfielders in general are our glaring weakness.

I don't think you can talk about who the #10 is without taking into account the wingers, since any decision regarding the three attack mids effects who is chosen for the other two spots.

At LW, the following players could play for us: Dempsey, Donovan, Corona, Bedoya, and maybe Shea. I did not include Fabian Johnson because that would mean Castillo or Beasley playing as LB (suicide). Anyway, FJ can provide aerial service but he's not really the type who can attack the goal, and we don't have anyone who is effective at doing that from the right-hand side. If we are holding a lead and need to take off an attacking mid, I wouldn't mind bringing on Castillo or Beasley to the left wing (keep Fabian at LB).

At CAM we have Demspey, Donovan, Corona, Bedoya, and Diskerud. Neither Dempsey nor Donovan are really #10's though...their strength isn't distribution, it's moving the ball in open space on counter-attacks (especially Donovan in his younger years) and pouncing on loose balls, using that quick first step to blow by defenders, and scoring (especially Demspey before he turned 30).

At RW...I don't know. Dempsey's strength is coming for the left and shooting from range, and especially now that he has slowed down, I don't see him as being effective from the right. Donovan is also better on the left. I've always thought of his natural position as playing in the hole as a withdrawn forward, and the closest to that is playing on the left wing (with plenty of freedom to cut on). He did play RM at Everton but that was in a less advanced role and before he lost his pace, and since he isn't a great crosser, I think he's much less effective on the right in his old age. Bedoya's strength is also cutting in from the left or playing down the middle. He isn't a great crosser and looks out of place on the right (his game there is too simple). I think he could be an effective player for us but Klinsmann insists on playing him on the right (one of Klinsmann's two big personnel mistakes, IMO). We also have EJ and Zusi, but they will be way in over their heads against the opposition in this group (sure, they'd be great against a team like South Korea, but we didn't draw a South Korea).

I think out of the RW options, Landon would be the best. At CAM, Deuce. He's not the same player he used to be but he's still better than our other attacking mids (except for maybe Lando) and the #10 is the most important position. On the left that leaves us with Bedoya (he's the next best), and Corona can come on as a sub if we're losing and need a goal.

I am pretty sure we'll end up playing FJ, Deuce, and Zusi. With Beasley as the LB (alongside Besler and Gonzalez). It keeps me up at night.

so, beginning with mexico game next week, can we bury ALL the excuses for dempsey???

not injured, did his little fulham thing, now back with seattle for a month. enough is enough

either he is the best guy for the job, or he isnt. obviously dempsey will start next week but if he does not look very good and offense sputters i think you have to move forward from there with LD at the 10 (well, depending on how LD looks, i suppose) dempsey on the bench, howard captain

I would agree with this. Especially when you think about it even deeper. Our midfield will likely be Lando, him, Zusi, with Bradley & either Edu or beckerman behind him. Other than Edu/Beckerman thats possibly our Brazil midfield (and Edu/Beckerman isnt much of a drop off from Jones anymore). Also with Beasley, Besler, OG/Goodson, Evans thats possibly our Brazil defense (Fabian will play somewhere but not sure where). Other than not having Jozy up top we have almost our complete starting lineup, 7 of 10 field players will probably start in Brazil. Throw in the fact that Mexico is without there Euro guys (5-6 starters for them as opposed to 2-3 starters for us) and we should be able to do what we want. If the offense stalls again and Dempsey is a main reason why I'm ready to move on from him. Not taking away what he did the last 5 years but every player has a life cycle and no shame in that.

I'm not seeing Dempsey as so bad that he's out of the lineup. He has played well since MLS started back. He scored one goal and hit the bar on another. If Jozy did that, he would have broken his streak, confidence back, and the offense is saved. Dempsey gets mauled all game every game in MLS and is still performing. I'm not excusing his nut shot, but his play has been good. I also don't see Zusi as a bench player. He works harder than almost everyone on the field and serves a great cross. I don't think Bedoya is that far behind him, nor is he much of a drop off. I imagine we will see Fabian at LB, Donovan at LW, Dempsey in the center, Zusi at RW and Altidore up top.

Lol. Dempsey is a cross bar away from having already two goals on the season for Seattle.

Dempsey is regaining form, and you can clearly see that from his play with Seattle.

Dempsey isn't getting benched, regardless of his play against Mexico. Fans make me laugh.

I rate Donovan above anyone in the attacking positions; there should be no reason why he should not start unless our coach doesn't like him.. Oh wait :/. But seriously, I think he can perform better than anybody we have in left/right sides or behind the striker. And he can cross with both feet at ease.
