Good to saw Montreal grab Drogba.

However, it's another star who is over the age of 35. We need to have more signings like Giovinco. Guys who are well established stars who are in their prime. Otherwise MLS will continue to be looked at as a retirement league, even though guys like Pirlo say they're not coming here to settle down and take it easy.

Again, I'm thrilled with some of the names we've been able to get this season. If you told me three years ago that we would have Kaka, Pirlo, Lampard, Villa, Gerrard, Giovinco, etc, I would have been ecstatic. But we have to continue to convince guys to move here in their prime in order to establish credibility.

It's a process. That isn't going to happen over night. The cap has been relaxed some, and the MLS is allowing more DP/special players. That was the first step: to even allow the MLS salary structures to be able to PAY these top players. Then you have to start attracting big names (old or not) and top younger talent from across the globe (step we are in now).

Once the MLS starts making noise on the international stage (Concacaf champs league, international cup, etc) and showing they can compete and win then they will start attracting better talent in the prime.

However unless they can get a legit International Club tournament going (more than what they have now) then we will NEVER get the best talent. The best talent is going to want to play in Europe and play Champions league (or have the shot of playing) soccer. That is the biggest stage. The elite will always want that. The MLS can never off that.

It would be great if they could expand the International Cup and make it a bigger deal. But it would have to (at least for English teams) take the place of the League Cup (not going to have room for EPL, League, FA, Champs League, and International).

NYRB signed Shaun Wright Phillips to a non-DP contract. He's 33 now and has barely played the past few seasons for QPR but he was great when he was younger at Man City. On a non-DP contract he seems worth taking a flyer on. This move should make Bradley happy if nothing else.

I dont area bout drogbas age. He just played UCL group stage and played meaningful minutes for the epl champs. Pirlo just started in the champs leagues fnal and starred for the serie a champs. They could have easily got another year with a top European team.

I still can't get past the discovery claim that the Fire had on Drogba. The Impact paid them $250k for his rights which the Fire have used on Gilberto.

But back to this discovery claim, I really hope they filed it in 1999 otherwise I want to be an MLS scout.

Right so answering my own question here is a great piece from the Portland Timbers brass at SBnation titled "Discovery Claims are an embarrassment to MLS"

You really don't need to read beyond that as they pretty much sum it up nice and neatly in the title but here's the scoop.

Clubs may make discovery claims on players not yet under MLS contract who are not subject to the allocation ranking or lottery mechanisms.

Each club has the opportunity to make six discovery signings per season (expansion teams may make 10 discovery signings in their inaugural season). A club may have up to 10 discovery claims on unsigned players at any time and may remove or add players at any time. The last day for discovery player signings is September 15, 2012 - coinciding with the roster freeze date and trade deadline.

The six discovery signings can be used to fill senior roster spots only. If multiple clubs claim the same player using a discovery, the club that filed the claim first will have first rights to the player. Discovery claims expire following each season. If the League and player are unable to reach an agreement during the season, the club that first filed the discovery retains the right of first refusal in the event the player is later signed by the League.

Hauptmann is a cheap bum who lives on the margins. Is Gilberto that same scrub from Toronto?

Wow! Who shit in your cornflakes? As Dunlopp said i was only laughing at the misprint. I am actually very excited that Lampard is in the league. Also, i am a Galaxy fan. Born and raised in LA. The Inland Empire isn't too far from me. Wanna grab a beer and talk this over?

"It's funny because me and my friends spoke before about where we'd like to retire if everything goes as planned, and America is definitely a place we think about," he said, adding that he wouldn't close the door on the idea of playing in the US further down the road.

"There's all sorts of great players here," Ali enthused, "but this is a place I'd love to live as well."

Ouch! This from a piece on the MLS website. What idiot would think publishing this is a good idea?

The Galaxy released Jaime Penedo. WTF? I don't understand that move at all.

Maybe they'll make a move for Dwayne Miller. Or maybe they'll convince the league to give them Tim Howard.
