Why not bring in DP's who can provide something that the average American player doesn't have...skill, creativity, technique? Why not bring in someone who is great on his own and who can carry a team and make the players around him play better rather than someone who needs quality around him to play well (e.g. Beckham)? Like a playmaker, for instance?

I only know what I've seen, but to me he has tremendous technique. He's scored some goals that I didn't think possible. I do know that strikers tend to be overpriced in the scheme of things, but given the number of goals he has produced for England, West Ham, Portsmouth and Tottenham I would expect a pretty good return on investment.[/quote]

He's a good finisher...but that's not what I'm talking about. He's too English. If we're talking about strikers, I want guys like Aguero or David Villa come to the MLS rather than the Crouches and Defoes. There are already players here of the exact same style (not as good, but the same type), people like EJ, Findley, etc.

I think the main point is being missed by a lot of people. This signing is a chance for mls to take a giant step to the next level. If guys like Defoe and Dempsey leave EPL for mls and succeed, score goals, gain fame/advertising, and show you can be selected for a World Cup roster even if plying your trade in the mls it will show other Europeans that they can come here before their international career is over. That would lead to some actual stars coming over. More stars lead to more stars. That's why his signing is a big deal

http://www.bbc.com/sport/0/football/25680333 The official announcement - made the BBC front page as the top Sport story.

@MSantoine, agreed. I mean, when it can be said that an England player moves to MLS to boost his chances of making the World Cup, that's a pretty big statement to make about how far our little league has progressed. Not to mention the lofty names that are being bandied about with the signing of MB the possible expansion stars coming in...

He got a massive ovation when he was subbed on in the second half against Palace and he just put the ball in the back of the net.

Toronto is going to love this signing but they must be crapping themselves that he's still playing.

No way England will pick Defoe to the WC team when playing for Toronto. Still very little respect given to the MLS over there.

So with Toronto signing Gilberto, Defoe and Bradley as DPs that will spell the end of Matias Laba in Toronto. It will be interesting to see where he ends up.

Agreed. With Laba likely on the market, then Edu, and Pappa also heading back to MLS, DCU should pick up at least 1 of the 3, preferably Pappa IMO.

Looks like Seattle is going to get Marco Pappa. Boom and Seattle just get even better. Awesome!

i wonder how much he is gonna get paid. He was an mvp candidate when he was in mls. He was playing well in Holland i guess he wanted to come back.

If Defoe gets to go to the World Cup with England and score goals helping them to the next round how much more attention would MLS get as a serious option?

No mls player has ever represented a European country in a World Cup. If Defoe makes it never mind scores it would be huge for the league

You should realize that England doesn't tend to score much in the world cup. Ultimate choke artists.
