First attempt

USA, Germany, Ghana, Bosnia. HOLY CRAP that would suck.

Second attempt

USA, German, England, Ecuador. Better, still not great

Third attempt

Belgiium, Chile, USA, Greece. Best of three

regardless, not going to be easy.

I just did ten simulations and we wouldn't qualify out of any of them.

Some of the people on here have absolutely delusional expectations about this team. I don't know if it's the rankings or the American complex or what but I can't believe people say they expect us to make it out of the group stage. At the moment we neither have the talent (we're in between generations) nor, more importantly, the right configuration of talent. Making it out of the group stage would be a huge success. Too bad the American public (and the fans, even) don't get that. They think we're a 10-15 team and failure to advance past the group stage (especially if against countries that aren't big names, such as Belgium, Croatia, Bosnia, or Chile) will be a huge missed opportunity to attract a lot of non-soccer fans to US soccer. I'm dreading this summer.

First attempt:

Brazil, Burkina Faso, Croatia

We'd get three points and crash out. We're nowhere near Croatia.

Second:

Cote d'Ivoire
Italy
Colombia

Three points and crash out. Falcao would rip us apart (and South American teams will have an edge). Colombia is playing well and needs this badly.

3rd:

Belgium
Chile
Portugal

We'd get one point, a draw against Chile. But because of the South American advantage, I could see us getting zero.

4th:

Spain
Chile
Croatia

See third.

5th:

Spain
Ecuador
Bosnia

I think we'd get two points (draws to Ecuador and Bosnia).

6th:

Brazil
Cameroon
Croatia

Three points (beat Cameroon).

7th:

Argentina
Netherlands
Cameroon

See sixth.

8th:

Germany
Ghana
Portugal

Zero points. We lose all three.

9th:

Germany
Ecuador
Bosnia

Two points. I think we'd lose to Germany and tie the other two, though I could see us finishing with one or zero. Maybe three.

10th:

Switzerland
Netherlands
Cote d'Ivoire

Three points. Beat Cote d'Ivoire and lose two the other two.

If we get top 10 teams in our group... and/or Ghana =D so long as we put forth a great effort, I wouldn't mind getting bounced out in the first round. What can you do if your opponents are better than you? As shown by the simulator, great chance this will be the case. But so long as we give them hell, I'll be satisfied.

I think there's a tendency to either be all doom and gloom or all rainbows and lollipops. The truth is somewhere in between. Essentially we are capable of either making an ignominious first round exit even in an allegedly easy group (and granted, there won't be many of those, in part because FIFA won't seed past the top line and in part because simply the top teams did qualify for the most part) or we're capable of pulling a couple of minor surprises and making a run. Depends on our form and health and that of our opponents. World Cup comes at the end of a very long season for most players and there's almost always a big name that disappoints. I don't think it will be any different this time. Dolcem, do you really think we have absolutely no chance of beating Croatia? Croatia lost twice this year to Scotland. Good team, but we can beat them on our day.

There's the mark of a true fan; having 0 belief in his team.

I, on the other hand, believe our team can make any game competitive when we are at our best, and I believe there is no team we can't beat on the right day. The WC is not meant to be easy, but crazy things always happen. We have the best and deepest team we have ever had, and I expect our performance to reflect that. We will compete in whatever group we are drawn into, and I (as a fan who actually SUPPORTS his team) believe we will make it out of our group. I don't think that's a delusional view at all.

We beat Spain and almost beat Brazil at the Confed. Cup and our team wasn't as deep or any more talented than this one. We are definitely deeper now and possibly more talented.

So are they. Spain just recently beat us in foxbore 4-0 and brazil 4-1. And honduras who finishee 3rd,, usa struggled against team got walked over, lost 5-0 to brazil. I would rather play euro teams than south american teams. We lost to belgium wich recently lost at home to colombia, argentina easily beat bosnia yesterday., oh also chile walked trough england easily at wenbley., so far south america is owning euro teams where ever they play.

Whoever thinks the USMNT is nowhere near Croatia does not live on this planet. The US can beat Croatia, they may be the favorites, but by no means are they soooo much better that we cant beat them.

The USMNT is capable of beating any team at any time. Sadly, we can also lose to anyone at anytime.

@red absolutely agree with your last sentence. We could beat anyone at any moment but then again we could lose to anyone at any moment.

I simulated usa burkina faso holland chile. We probably pull a huge upset, beat holland, then lose to burkina, tie chile.

Me too, but the American public (and a lot of the fans) will feel differently, especially if some of these top 10-15 teams aren't big names.

Of course we have a chance at beating them. On our day we can beat anyone in the world. But it would be unlikely.

I think being a true fan and supporting the team has to do with actually supporting them. I went to the World Cup in '06 (saw all three US games) and am planning on going to this one. When I go to a US game I'm the loudest fan there. That is how you support a team. Support has nothing to do with how realistic your expectations are for how well we will do. And no, this isn't the best team we've ever had. Sure we're playing better than we ever have and we're deeper, but I do not think our starting eleven is the best it has ever been.

That was during a meaningless tournament and when Dempsey and Donovan were in their prime. But yeah sure, we can beat anyone on any given day...I'm just being realistic. Us getting out of the group stage will involve some big upsets.

Of course we can beat Croatia, I'm just saying they're a lot better than us and doing so would be an upset.

USA could beat Spain in the world cup, but then randomly lose to Iran... we are very unpredictable!

I think there will be 2 groups of death this year. If you look at the quality of teams this season, 2 of them is totally plausible.

Colombia / USA / Nigeria / Russia is the best I've been able to pull off, and have been playing for an hour. Obviously a slow work day.

Argentina / Cameroon / USA / Russia not too bad

Belgium / USA / Algeria / Russia decent

We keep getting Russia.
