Really no Altidore ? No way Parker will start let alone a spot in the 23.

I agree altidore will not start if he doesn't pick up his game and parker is better then almost ever other option we have right now for outside play. He's strong and fast and also can finish. Who is better???

We need to resolve the CB situation soon, mainly if Brooks gets a real look and is actually in the mix. Then we'll have a better idea where Cameron ends up.

The only players I'm truly excited to see on the field at the WC at this point are Howard, Besler, Cameron, FJ, MB, LD and Johannsson.

JK still has a lot of questions to answer. I don't like the JJ situation...the outside back situation...and Deuce as captain, and how that negatively affects the already lukewarm on field chemistry with LD. Anything that minimizes LD impact on the game is a bad thing. I think we could see some magical combo play if we choose to run the attack through LD and Johannsson. If Deuce, as captain , is given a major role in the build up, then we're selling ourselves short.

We have yet to see Donovan and Johannsson play together. With a fully fit Landon, our attack should look pretty good.

I'm surprised so many feel dempsey has the ability to track back and help with defense at this stage in his career. Even at Fulham when he played left mid, he would follow a man but rarely took defending seriously. He roamed more than anything.

Or is it that you simply think DMB or FJ should play LB and just stay there for the most part with little overlapping?

I'm not sold on the OP line-up. I don't see both Donovan and Dempsey as starters come 2014. The CM combo will be problematic. And we'll have the typical problems of the 4-4-2: the strikers will be too isolated from the midfield, it'll be too hard to maintain possession without that extra man in the midfield. The 4-5-1 is the way to go. Although it's very similar to the 4-4-1-1, you could think of that formation as a 4-5-1 with the CAM not dropping back in to the midfield enough and distributing to the forward and wingers. Johansson isn't that type of player; he's not the #10 that makes the 4-5-1 work well.

It's a huge shame that two of our best three field players (arguably) are strikers. Two strikers is not the way to go. We already tried the 4-4-2 diamond with CM's and it didn't work (yes, adding a creative CM in place of one of those DM's would have helped, but it wouldn't have taken us from awful to good). I think AJ could be a great sub though, as could Dempsey and Donovan.

I'm hoping for an in-form Howard, a Johnson-Brooks-Cameron-Cherundolo backline, and the rest is up in the air. The CM pairing is really difficult because we haven't found one that works (I'd love to see Bradley as a six with Torres as a deep-lying playmaker, which won't happen; Bradley playing as a six with any of our options would be nice but I don't know if that'll happen). The attacking midfielders are a disaster. We have Donovan, Dempsey, and Bedoya being the best on paper but the first two are old, a bit washed up, and probably not good for a full 90, and Bedoya hasn't really shown a lot yet. Backups could be EJ, Zusi, and Shea (on the wings), and none of them are capable of doing well against good opponents. Altidore vs. Johannsson is a tough debate at striker but I think I prefer Altidore (partially because he's actually American).

Aside from the back five I have no idea who should/will play. And it's ugly (except at striker).

If i see one more post on this site regarding Torres the "deep lying playmaker" I'm done. He sucks. Get over it.

Right now here are my 3 impact subs at the WC:

1. Shea
2. Diskerud
3. Zusi: I think Zusi is a sub come WC.

The only way I see Dempsey starting at the WC is if he regains form and we adopt a 4-4-2

Howard
Dolo/Cameron, Besler, Brooks/Gonzo, FJ/Beasley/Lichaj
Evans/Bedoya, MB, Jones, LD/Mix/Zusi
Jozy, Deuce/AJ/EJ

...umm care to explain? Does he suck based on his club play? On his NT play (always out of position)?

Really don't think I talk about it very much, at least not to the extent other posters talk about their favorites.

I think Torres can be effective at times, but I would rate him like Kljestan. Average. Like other people have mentioned JK has tried people in different positions to see if they could adapt their games. Torres I believe had two decent games at LW. Never provided much at CAM, and has always lacked bite in a CM position.

I think Kljestan has an edge on him. And Torres' club career has been more up and down over the past 12 months compared to Kljestan.

For me, its about what that player can do on the day at the world cup. And in my opinion, Torres can give us more than Kljestan. Unfortunate that he won't be on the roster.

IMO the opposite is true. Torres excels in games against lesser competition where he can have time on the ball, whereas Klejstan is at his best in the high tempo games you are more likely to find in the World Cup. I'm no huge Klejstan supporter, he doesn't really impress me, but neither has Jones lately. If Jones continues to struggle I would pick him to play next to Bradley, with Bradley dropping to the #6.

As for the rest, I don't expect Donovan and Dempsey to both start, if simply for the reason that they are both old and there is at least a decent chance that one of them is not fully fit in 7 months (leaning toward LD on that one). That opens up a spot for AJ possibly, but I think it is very unlikely AJ starts over Jozy. Jozy has gotten done against top competition, AJ still has a lot to prove.
