Some ppl getting touchy about other ppls choices on here, just silly. Clearly this is all just fun opinion, likely with heavy personal bias involved. As a Chelsea fan this has been a tough forum to read, with Lampard, Ballack, and Essien all mentioned early on. Obviously I value these players higher than non-Blues fans may, but I would have to strongly disagree with the post claiming Essien to be overrated.

In his prime, Essien was one of the best MFers on the planet. Strong tackler? Check. Good distributor? Check. Athleticism/hustle? Check. Shooting abilities? Double check. Besides, how many players in the world could come back from a long injury recovery, pushing 30 years old, and be welcomed to Real Madrid on loan? Not too many I would think.

No hard feelings or anything, just defending one of my all-time favourites .

As far as over-rated goes, I'd have to go with Chicharito. On a Man U side stacked with talented midfielders to facilitate you and Wayne Rooney to draw defenses, how could you NOT have at least 1 good season?

Not sure if you were referring to me, didn't mean to come off as touchy, it was just a bit of banter.

I agree with you on Essien, I think he was a great player (though not my type).

I definitely agree with you about Chicharito. So overrated. He's a decent poacher, nothing more. There's a reason he can't even overtake Welbeck on the depth chart despite scoring goals. He can't do anything other than score tap-ins and doesn't make anyone around him play better.

But how can you guys not think Beckham was overrated? He was the most hyped player of his generation and nowhere near the best. I bet I could name 10-15 midfielders of the 90's and 00's that were better than him. That to me makes him overrated.

Javier Saviola. Always considered Argentinas next great player, but it just never really happened for him.

Wasn't calling anybody out in particular, just thought it was funny how sharply Lampard was being debated. It's a more or less subjective topic based on biased and personal experiences watching a player. I'm a Chelsea fan, I love Lampard, but I totally get how one would see him as overvalued. Of course I then went totally hypocritical and defended Essien to death, but I love me some Essien.

Of course, we all know Freddy Adu is the most overrated player of all time *sits back and prepares to watch the chaos*

I'm going to add another one.

Wayne Rooney. Yeah he was great around 2009, 2010, but way overhyped because he was English. I always thought he was a poor man's Tevez and even when he was in really good form I knew it was temporary. I'm not surprised he hasn't done shit the past three years. The media though is very easy on him for being English...any other player who has been in a slump for that long would no longer be considered a top player. He gets a free pass though and is still considered to be elite.

Owen Hargreaves. I think the English media and fan base have a tendency to overhype any English player that shows signs of being a decent player.

Andy Carrol

Peter Crouch

You could probably do a list of 50 English players since 2000 that have been grossly overhyped by the English media and fan base.
