Lee is unhappy with his contract. He skipped practice last week in protest.

175K for Nguyen is criminal. Hope he gets his money but Kraft is tough.

Right but I think this is going to be an interesting case study for the league. Nguyen is in year two of a four year deal that he signed. Of course he lit the league on fire in year one so his salary looks like peanuts compared to what you'd expect based on performance.

Still from the Revs and the league's perspective he's in a firm contract and given that the league has fought tooth and nail to prevent salary inflation through the likes of the absurd concept that they call free agency (that 8 year 28 year old nonsense that came out of the CBA) I can't imagine that they'll entertain his demand as it would set a precedent for every player that performs significantly above their salary level whilst under a multi-year contract going forward.

The risk is that Nguyen, will find a willing suitor for his salary requirements abroad and leave in the summer. Even so the league would have the right to decline the transfer. This could get ugly. The best situation is to find a reasonable salary that all parties can agree on that keeps Nguyen with the Revs/MLS but I don't think we've heard the last of this story.

I doubt the Revs budge on this one. Yes he is their engine in offense, and yes he was one of the three best players in MLS. But the Revs (and Kraft specifically) never give in. They'll tell him to seek a transfer out of MLS if he's unhappy and give more responsibility to Agudelo, Rowe, Fargundez, & Caldwell. There current best XI

Bunbury-Davies-Agudelo
Nguyen-Caldwell-Jones
Tierney-Goncalves-Farrell-Woodbury.

Without Lee they just switch to Rowe instead of him or drop Agudelo in his role and play Fargundez. They wont fall apart. Krafts understand this.

Not for nothing, and I absolutely LOVE Lee Nguyen, this is a pretty entitled diva move. Pretty interesting, and from reading his history I can imagine that he's been this way for awhile now.

I mean, how much difference is this from Agudelo Adu etc with regards to what they asked for and what they ultimately accomplished?

On the plus side, I hope this means more inspired Nguyen play, with "PAY ME WHILE YOU PLAY ME" moves on defenders to showcase his marketability and value. And at this point, I think it's best the MLS makes money off of him on a transfer, Southampton rumors anyone (wait, what if it's his agent who's putting those out there), because an attitude like that can be quite toxic, and is best kept away from the league.

They are different now already in comparison to last year with an under performing Nguyen. I guess that is what Kraft is banking on; last year being an outlier. And what you point out is right, if they lose Nguyen, it's not the end of the world, especially since you can always pull the Jones in midfield card and establish a very dominant midfield at any time.

I know it's a lame reference but when I see these situations I always think of the movie Mr. Deeds. The player always wants more money because they played well. What if the player plays bad, will they accept less money then?

If Lee transfers abroad any rumors to England are pointless. There is no chance he will get a UK work permit. He has 6 caps with the MNT since 2007. That doesn't come anywhere near the 75% threshold needed for a work permit. Agudelo has a more impressive resume and is significantly younger and he got denied twice.

He is 28 years old and demanding more money? The Krafts wont budge especially since the Revs have far younger players who can play Lee's position if need be.

Also Lee is a shell of what he was last year.

Most players, any profession, have incentives in their contract. So, play poorly and you do get paid less. No compensation scheme is ever perfect. Plenty of us fat asses get bonuses at work. Bonus payout is usually more to do w/ company (ie, team) performance rather than individual.

Who knows what passport he may have. Some Asian/African countries are exempt from this.
