So after initially thinking how awesome it is that Mexico is against the ropes and how great it would be if they failed to qualify I got thinking. Other than the rubbing it in their face factor (which I love so dont get me wrong) I got to thinking what is better for the US longterm and it is without a doubt Mexico claiming the 4th spot and beating New Zealand. When not taking bribes FIFA is constantly looking at making changes to the qualification and allotment of teams per federation. If Panama takes 4th they should beat New Zealand but may not. Also in the world cup its hard to picture Panama being better than Mexico.

So lets say Panama takes it and beats New Zealand. If them, Honduras, and CR perform poorly FIFA may look to take away our 4th place playoff spot as both SA and Africa have been claiming they deserve more seeds based on past results. A poor showing by CONCACAF means other federations have to have strong performances and could make CONCACAF look like how it did in the early 90s as a one nation fed. Because of that reason I think we should hope Mexico turns it around and gets their act together. Its in our long term best interest

lets face it - this mexico team is mediocre, at best. i think NZ will win that tie, whoever it is.

the better team will finish 4th - whoever it is

why root for a lousy mexico team?

Nope I will never root for Mexico. Nowhere else in the world does a fan base root for their most bitter of rivals.

Firstly, I watched New Zealand play recently.....they're pretty bad. They maybe could keep it close with a few teams in the bottom of the Hex but I'd like CONCACAF's chances anyways. Besides Shane Smeltz, Chris Wood & Winston Reid, that's really all they have.

To echo 2tone, no solid USMNT fan should ever root for Mexico unless them winning has direct, positive implications on the USMNT. Remember, these are the fans who boo our anthem, throw batteries and bags of urine, and just generally are our regional rivals. For reference, see Sutcliffe's interview with Guardado on ESPN's pregame last night: "We are better than them without a doubt." It's fun to be right....

Its more about the draw that determines who does well or not. I mean Africa should first have team qualify to next round before they cry a river. Look at the last world cup which was in African soil on GHana made it through thats it!. When in CONCACAF we only had 3 teams and 2 made it to next rounds. With this squad (unless we get group of death) I see USA qualifying, Even Costa Rica and Honduras making good noise. I have no doubt mexico will be there once they get their **** together whatever it is. CONCACAF 3.5 spots will not be in jeopardy

Simply put, Mexico is the 5th best in CONCACAF, at the moment. If you want the best to represent CONCACAF at the WCF then the four (assuming 4th place defeats NZL) best teams should go. The only way the region can make noise at the Finals is if the best teams are there. Currently, Mexico isn't one of them.

If Mexico doesn't make it they don't deserve to just because they're Mexico.

If Mexico finish 4th I'm rooting for New Zealand. If Mexico finishes 3rd I'm rooting for them to go three and out at the Finals. I want to see Mexico lose.

If CONCACAF only gets three spots for the 2018 World Cup then I only care if the USNT finishes in the top three. I don't care about any other team in CONCACAF in the grand scheme of things.

Any team where the individuals can play well for their clubs have the potential to be a good national team. Drama, mistrust, emotions, and everything from every episode of Gossip Girls has occurred. They can fade away too.

I'll definitely enjoy the October games because what's at stake should make for some exciting games but even if FIFA knocks CONCACAF down to three spots no playoff in 2018 the US needs to keep the pressure on throughout the process to land one of those spots

I don't care to much about the hypothetical strength of these teams relative to another and what that hypothetically means for CONCACAF in the long-run. I just look forward to watching how it all shakes out.

It really doesn't matter whether there are three or four spots in WCQ. The USMNT is at a point where they should be qualifying for every World Cup, no matter how many spots are available.

When Seattle plays other countries clubs teams in the CCL do Portland fans root for them to lose? I know when the yankees are in the world series there are some boston fans that want them to win as they represent the AL. Cowboy fans root for the Giants over the Pats in recent superbowls. I bet when Bayern played Chelsea two years again in the UCL finals there were plenty of Schale, and Dortmund, and 1860 fans that rooted for them (and Man U/City fans probably rooted for Chelsea). It happens in sports all the time.

Nope never root for mexico to do well. They would never root for us to do well why should we root for them. They are our rivals I wish them the very best chances to not make the world cup. Plus its hard to root for them considering all the crap they have pulled whether its booing our national anthem numerous times or throwing urine at our players numerous times.

Never. Could care less about Mexico. I think it would be absolutely HILARIOUS if Mexico didn't qualify.

The USMNT is the future of this region, Mexico have been an average national team for the past half a century. They have won 1 ko game at the WC...and really have never been a top 10 team in the world at any point in their history.

As the US go on we will carry the CONCACAF flag in WC's and there will be a point where friendlies against top teams will be more difficult than qualifying.
