It's the same everywhere. Even the worst team, my Chicago Fire (which is owned by a holding company who waits out a sale until the franchise gets worth more $$$$ as the league value increases), doesn't play the kids.
We didn't understand when Victor Pineda (first homegrown signing) didn't get to play.
Then Collin Fernandez hasn't played (for two years running) and will disappear.
Last year, the u17-18 team won the ussda; fans thought we would see new changes with a new regime led by a youth coach, Paunovic. Fans clamored for pro contracts for the leaders of that youth champion team, Mauricio Pineda (CB, younger bro of Victor) and the captain, Cam Lindley (CM - a real Steven Gerrard type player). These guys dedication to the Fire is fantastic and their skills merited pro contracts. Instead they are both at the University of North Carolina playing college soccer. And the goal scorer in the championship game last year (bumped up a level for the playoffs due to his skills and promise), promising USA u-19 attacking midfielder Djordje Mihailovic? He has committed to UNC next year already. The Fire don't even have a FireII team in USL pro like the Galaxy and Sounders.... As Jürgen says we have a long way to go towards moving forward in our youth development.

Landon Donovan is narcissistic but this has Don Garber's grubby fingerprints all over it. He and the rest like Andrew Hauptmann, the "owners" of soccer as Don tweeted a little while ago, only care about $$$, and the future values of the franchises. If Landon, super muppet that he is, brings only 1% more viewership (and judging by the fawning of adms and his ilk, it's more like 3-5%), then Garber is all for it. Who cares about Jose Villareal anyway???

This is hiting the nail on the head. To me its unfathomable that not only are the good teams not playing youth but the bad ones arent either. Thats an issue with the league setup. FC Dallas has done a great job of introducing their youth while mixing it with talented veterans. The result has been one of the better teams in the regular season past two years. Pareja helps as well but if you can mix good coaching with young talent it usually ends well. Klinsmann has noted that we do have a lot of young talent coming through but at the end of the day clubs have to give these young guys a chance. Especially if the veterans are getting chance after chance and not doing much.

Why are so many here being haters for Landon returning. The only reason he came back is because Galaxy is plagued with injuries he just wanted to help. He never said he was gonna take over younger players or play 90 minutes. He said he is happy coming off the bench stop bashing on him. If galaxy were healthy he would of never came out retirement. If anything y'all should be praising him for helping out his beloved team when their in need of help.

I think more and more, it matters less who each person in each academy is, than the head coach.

We need Oscar Pareja clones EVERYWHERE, AND Jay Heaps wanna bee's too. SEriously, I don't care if the team doesn't play defense, that's never hurt the dutch league, and besides

It must be akin to the NBA. In a league with so many teams, and really no risk of losing a franchise, it's more financially beneficial to just be bad, than spend to be better or good. Despite being a nothing franchise, the 76ers could sell for north of a billion. Heck, the Milwaukee Bucks are worth a billion.

RSL and an Eastern Conference team are making a play for Donovan according to SBI.

How are the Quakes not all over this like a rash? I mean I hope DC is the Eastern Conference team but I think I'd rather see Donovan end his career in San Jose.

Won't be surprised if China offers him a huge offer to play 1 year. But I would rather see him take some kind of role with the MNT coaching/mentor wise. Also I would love if Bradley became the Assistant for the MNT.

Skangles, I was thinking the same thing...makes a lot of sense. Wondo and LD are close friends, they have great chemistry. SJ is in dire need of a quality creator....LD would be the perfect combo set up man for Wondo. LD is familiar with Kinnear...he was Yallop's assistant when LD was in SJ.

It might be a bit of rub with the LA fans if he went to SJ. I would love to see it happen, but I don't think he would go directly to SJ....maybe he comes back to another team and then miraculously gets traded after the summer to the Quakes. It would be a nice touch....a little unfinished business in SJ.

Unlike a lot of Quake fans who thought he was being a traitor, I understood his need to be
down it came out later in his career, how vital that was to his success for club and country.. to be in close proximity to his was a huge bummer we lost the best player in the league...never had an issue with LD...but I had a huge issue with the league on how it was handled and the utter lack of fair compensation for losing the best player in the league. Total smoke and mirror job by MLS...power play by AEG with Garber's blessing....still pisses me off.

It would be great story if he did return...and in some weird way bring a little closure to losing him....for a scrappy low budget team, he was our great hope...still hurts after all these years.
