@skangles I'm not saying he is a great analyst but is he any worse than lalas, twellman ?? Doubt it. But for commentators jp de la camera is the worst ever lol. Landon brings experience and most importantly VIEWS i bet more people will tune in and in part because of Landon.

It's a tough one to argue because I agree with your premise that these guys are painful to listen to. Is Landon worse? Yes, and the reason is that at least with Lalas and Twellman they have charisma and passion. You may swear at your TV in response to what they say but they're engaging enough to have their comments register. I have no idea what Landon babbles on about.

It's interesting that Fox plans to use Lalas as in game commentary. He's a studio guy in my book because he takes extreme stances and backs them to the death. Albeit, the one time I heard him in the booth he was a last minute fill in (it might have been for Twellman) and he was alright. He was unusually mild for being Lalas but I suspect that was due to a lack of time to prepare.

Yeah but Donovan won't be the main guy on tv most likely he will come in at the end of conversations to give his feedback. Is not like he will get into a heated battle with lalas or wynalda and go at it back and forth for minutes. I see him as a Bob ley type of analyst just come in when necessary and give a quick response at the end.

Donovan doesnt speak with passion. I dont think he'll come off well in the broadcasts.

On the other hand some of these guys start out like shit and get better. If he works at it and really wants to get into it he could turn out to be pretty good. His perspective is definitely unique. No one like him.

Not saying he couldn't grow into it but there's a reason why most of the best play by play and analysts weren't star players. A lot didnt even play the game. Really you need someone articulate who understands how the game is played so they can paint the picture for you. Landon obviously knows more about how to play soccer than most people. The question is can he explain it in a way that doesnt turn people off.

I can't agree about the knocks on Lalas and Twellman.
Sure, Lalas might be more of a studio guy and is an unknown for color commentary; and Twellman is a little chummy, but they both think of useful things to say, and they're better than some of their counterparts. Twellman specifically is a good combo of a good player but not a legend. That's the perfect color commentary background.

Anyone ever hear Cobi Jones do color commentary? You would think he never played.

I would be thrilled if Fox Sports just brought on Liam McLeod and Michael Stewart to call all of their games. They called the Gers vs Bhoys Scottish Cup match a few weeks back and were a breath of fresh air.

Yes, 100% agree. BeIn would be stupid to let him leave and he seems to genuinely love getting to call Messi and Ronaldo but money talks.

So you're saying he's not automatically in your depth chart top 3 in 3 different positions the moment he returns, dunlopp?

People start hyping up Pulisic and saying he might become the greatest player we've ever produced, Landon decides to come out of retirement. Coincidence? I think not.

I'm mostly joking (although there probably is some truth in there). He just can't help himself. Needs to be back in that spotlight.
