It's a shame LD had no drive or desire to better himself. He was good enough to play on big teams in Europe. Had he actually gave a shit then coupled with a quality club career and usmnt career he might still be the best. MLS is bringing him down.
If you don't love it, leave it, USA #1

I'm a huge LD fan, but in 50 years there will be at least one player that surpasses his skillset. It will be extremely difficult to surpass his numbers, because the comp level the newer players would deal with would be much higher. He was a big fish in a small pond for a long time. But as the US continues to improve and goes deeper in the WC, someone will have an opportunity to score some very big goals for us in the later stages of the tourney. That would carry a lot of weight and potentially put them in the conversation for best ever...if they had a great run in multiple WCs. LD scored some massive WC goals, but someone will have an opportunity to go where he has never gone...semifinals or final...so in my mind the door is open for someone to have a greater impact at the highest level.

He's not even "hands down" the greatest American right now. You guys have short memories and over rate LD in comparison with other Americans that came before him or are currently playing. If you like one way players who folded against better players, LD is the man for you.

Get a grip and quit with the hero worship. In his prime, 2006, he was an embarrassment as our best player in an ugly flameout in Germany. Even 2010 (a certain clutch tap in saves another awful tournament) he was poor for the most part, especially against Ghana. When you are truly the best, you don't have off years or off tournaments like LD.

Great player, but I think the California crowd is a little biased on this one. Club exploits aside, he was always a letdown.

Ham, you're full of it. It isn't a one player effort. And when you're one of the best players on your team, you are the focal point for the other team's defense. High level international defenders can mark you right out of a game if there aren't other players to draw the attention away. 2006 was a debacle and part of that was Arena's tactical approach. LD always a letdown...completely negative biased comment.

Probably true about the bias the other way Chris. I can't erase all the times he disappeared in big games. Sorry, he's just not any better than Harkes, Ramos, Reyna, Stewart, Bocanegra, maybe even tim Howard and Beasley get in there. There are others I didn't mention. It's just not cut and dry like you all say.

Landon is an all time great, but you guys are leaving out others and generally whitewashing history by making the last 10 years all about Landon. So it goes both ways.

Because before Landon, the USA would mostly get kicked around. Where was Reyna in 06 too? He fucked up vs Ghana. Mexico would whoop the shit out of US, till LD came around. Never saw harkes but Ramos, Reyna, Stewart are not as American as LD. And Stewart was good but not great. LD was phenomenal. Wynalda had quality too but LD is cooked separately. Hey, I really hope someone does come to tear records sooner than later. Screw the records, I hope we can have someone make a difference and carry the team like he did at least for one cycle.

Lol as in they would have preferred their birth/parent countries over the US if they were good enough. Like USA was their second option like Fabjo, Chandler, Jones, and there's more.

No sane person would argue that LD is not the best American player ever. Of course not everyone in this forum is sane. The more interesting conversation is who is the 2nd best ever.

I don't have a problem if someone says Jones, but I take him out of the conversation because he didn't declare US until 2009(?) and he missed the 2010 WC. I still have dreams of him over Rico vs. Ghana. . .

So for me #2 is Reyna. He's still had the most successful European career of any field player. Even more impressive given the late start coming out of college.

And then you say Jones? Hahaha. Ok Paul pierce. Wait, yea Paul pierce, that's about Landon's level. Couldn't even take guys 1v1 for the most part.

Landon was the best at one thing only: corner kick taker, free kick taker. LD was great at putting the ball in the danger area.

All the Landon Haters obviuosly did not watch him play his whole Career most probably started watching us soccer after 2006 wc.

Again, he was scoring goals in MLS when the defending was not great. As the league continues to improve, it will be harder to score. Because the level of play will be better. So Landon's stats will always have a little asterisk next to them.

Oh yea why weren't all the other players scoring and assisting goals like him then ????
I could make the same Argument in the NBA Wilt and Jabbar scored easily because no one played defense. MLB babe Ruth had all those Home Runs because the pitchers weren't as good. Jerry rice broke all those records because secondary's sucked back then.
