Their confidence seemed fine to me. Or were you in the locker room with them, so you have an accurate, inside scoop on the team's confidence?

Really ? Getting Dominated in 3 out of 4 games and the only good game falling apart at the end does not seem like motivation or confidence in their game.

Yeah, it's not. It's called the lack of technical ability that other nations have. That's why we lost, not because of confidence issues. You want to sit here and tell me Clint Dempsey was devoid of confidence when he slalomed past defenders within 30 seconds of the start of the match to score?

Sorry, if devoid is too hard of a word for you, here's this:

Devoid: not possessing, untouched by, void, or destitute (usually followed by of).

Nice try but I know what it means. Is just 1 play to bad he did not do it vs Germany or Belgium. Wondo missed because he had no confidence in his game. And Ghana was not the same team as before we should be able to beat them we were actually favorites going into the game. If I was to look at the 4 games we played to the 4 games we played in 2010 by far we played much better. And I know the competition was not as tough in 2010 but they looked with more confidence.

I would say the USMNT looks much better in the WC with an injury free Altidore.

But, that's in the past. Time to move on, folks. A new WC cycle is upon us. The time for debating on new players, new formations, and Klinsmann as a coach is nigh.

You do understand there is a difference in 'Parking the bus' and having to play defense because your attacking players/midfielders can't maintain possession.

Ghana - first 20 minutes we played exactly what JK said he wanted. Then Altidore goes down and our tactics changed. A- We were up 1-0, B-Dempsey had a broken nose, C-Bradley, AJ, Dempsey couldn't hold on to possession to save lifes. So it looked like we were parking the bus, but realistically we were just sucking up front. Then Zusi and Brooks came on and we looked better and held possession better.

Portugal - Pretty sure there was VERY Little parking the bus in this game and we had over 50% possession if I remember correctly.

Germany - Yeah we parked the bus and played very conservatively. Which was the right tactic in that position. A-All we really had to do was not get blown out, B-our guys were tired (as was almost everyone else).

Belgium - we did anything BUT park the bus. Belgium had a LOT of space that they were exploiting because we were trying to play the beautiful game and trying to get forward. Opening up a LOT of space for the Belgium attacking players. That's why you saw a lot of saves by Howard and not many clearances by our defenders.

No people are tired of hearing certain people talk over and over about a non-issue. This is like when your buddy keeps talking about the ex girlfriend he still loves, even though it's obvious it's been over for a while now. But hey who am I joking, Landon in all reality is probably these kids idol, and it's hard for me to tell anyone else to take the Landon posters down off their walls. But you could on the forum because no one else cares.

Couldn't have stated it better myself. At least there is one person that saw what I saw.

For real doh. Let's move on. So much negative energy talking about losing haha. We have 4 years of scouting, getting pissed off at each other, making fun of admsghs27's... well everything, and speculating to do. That's much more fun to me, and I'm sure it is for you.

Buutttt if we're gonna keep talking about it I agree with most of what USAGunner said. I think Belgium we COULD have done a LITTLE better. But we were better than Portugal, HAD to change tactics for Ghana, and obviously had to park the bus for Germany. As I've said before I think we did pretty much the best with what we had, but we didn't have someone that could have replaced anyone who plays in front of a DM and recently announced retirement from professional footballing. On to 2018!

Agree with the general sentiment that we looked the best in the Portugal game. Probably no coincidence that Portugal had the most injury/personnel issues of our group.

I guess the false conclusion that many draw is they see one team constantly on the attack and it means that the other team is parking the bus. When in reality there are MANY reasons why that could be going on.

Just one for example:

Team A (constantly on the defense) has bad linkup play and little to no hold up play, thus when they do win the ball, even if they try and attack, they quickly turn it over and their attack goes nowhere, resulting in the other team having another attack. Their strategy is not to just defend, but to attack, they just suck at it.

I was just thinking about this also. One thing about the USA in the past is that we have generally had speedy wingers that can get out on the counter attack and cause problems with their speed by getting behind. Thus making other teams at least slow their attack down and keep people back. Donovan in his prime, Dempsey, Beasley, etc. Or just fast strikers who can do the same (Altidore, EJ, Davies, etc).

Well even if we were to do that in 2014 (defend and counter), we didn't have that option anymore. Bedoya and Zusi have great work rate, but they aren't scaring anyone on the counter. Dempsey in that regard is not quite what he used to be on the counter (more dangerous in other areas now), Donovan is not near as fast as he once was. Once Altidore went down, we had little speed in the mid-field to actually get out and counter (putting AJ, Mix, Wondo, etc in there wouldn't have changed that either). Which is why Altidore's hold up play was so key for this team. We could defend, then get the ball to altidore, let our midfielders get into the attack (which passing they are all better at than we have been in the past) and create some combinations. A completely different attack than what we have seen for the USA in the past.

That is one reason why when we did bring on Yedlin in the Midfield, we looked so much better, because he has that speed to cause people problems.
